MINISTRIES-OUTREACH
The Bread of Life Food Pantry
The Bread of Life Food Pantry is a faith-based non-profit organization
created to help our neighbors supplement their food budgets. It includes
other churches and groups in the community such as the Boy Scouts and the
Buffalo High School Student Council, and is directed by a board of our
parishioners. St. Luke’s has an Ingathering Sunday once a month in
addition to special food drives. At Christmas time, parishioners take
coupons for hams and all the “fixins” off the Church Christmas tree and
purchase those items for the Food Pantry. In the past year, it provided
service through 3307 household visits (8135 people). It is open Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday from noon to 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Our phone number is 684-5213.
Sheep for the Bread of
Life Food Pantry
This year, as a special fund raiser, we purchased twenty life-sized
fiberglass sheep. These were bought by sponsors and given to local
artists to decorate. They will be on exhibit throughout town,
join the parade for the National Basque Festival here in July
and
be auctioned off at their evening gala. This is just another
innovative way that the Bread of Life Food Pantry ministers to the
deserving people of our community.
Overseas Missions
This year our Out-Mission funds support Missionary Joan Smith who is
serving in Ethiopia in the schools. Joan was able to be in her home
community of St. Luke’s for a period of time last summer where she shared
her experiences and gathered materials (especially children’s books) for
her current assignment. She sends us periodic updates on her mission.
The ECW sponsors a number of children in several countries overseas also.
Meals On Wheels
We are fortunate in Buffalo to have an active Senior Center that provides
lunch for seniors at the center and also to those unable to come to the
Center through the Meals on Wheels Program. Drivers for the Meals on
Wheels program are volunteers. St. Luke’s became involved with this
outreach ministry many years ago, and we have provided drivers on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays every June since that time. Our parishioners are
more than willing to sign up for a day or two each so that all the meals
get delivered. Some of our members also volunteer throughout the year,
especially on weekends and holidays. We are proud to be part of this
ministry to the elderly, disabled and shut-ins of our community.
Hospital Visits
Our “walking missionary”, George Grace, daily visits those who are
confined to the hospital and the Amie Holt Nursing Home. He displays a
joyful smile, making each person feel special!
